Davis Library Summer Reading Challenge 2023: Guidelines

Guidelines and recommended booklist for 2023's Summer Reading Challenge through the University of Rio Grande's Davis Library.

  • The reading challenge will take place for the months of June, July, and August 2023. To qualify for prizes, all participants must show proof of the books read before Davis Library's business day ends on August 31, 2023.
  • All members of the Rio Grande community that are high school age or older are welcome to participate (this includes URG students, alumni, staff, faculty, and any members of the surrounding community that meet the age requirement). For patrons that do not have an ID number through the University, you will need to swing by Davis Library to get your Community Borrower Card prior to completing the challenge.
  • We have compiled a Booklist with recommendations for the challenge divided into genres for easy browsing. To participate, you may choose books specifically from our list, or you may choose ANY books as long as they are of a similar reading level to those on the list (for example, children's picture books will not count towards prizes for this challenge).
  • You do NOT have to acquire the book from our library to get credit for reading it; you may get them however is most convenient for you. We are just excited that you're joining us!
  • If you are interested in checking out a book not listed in our library catalog, we are happy to assist you in locating it through other library loan options to be picked up at Davis Library; just ask a library staff member for help!
  • How to enter: You do not have to sign up for the reading challenge beforehand. Instead, as you complete the books, you can let us know in a couple of different ways:
  1. Social Media: If you are on Facebook or Instagram, once you complete a book, you can post a photo of you with your book or a creative photo of your book in a fun locale or favorite reading spot. In the caption of your post, you will put your rating of the book out of five stars and a mini review of your thoughts (this can be as short as one sentence or if you're very passionate, as long as you want it to be). Remember to tag us in your post so we know you have completed a book! (Instagram: @davislibraryurg)  (Facebook: @davislibrary)
  2. Email: Once you complete a book, you can email us (refdesk@rio.edu) a photo of you with your book or a creative photo of your book in a fun locale or favorite reading spot. In the body of your email, you will include that you are participating in the summer reading challenge, your rating of the book out of five stars, and a mini review of your thoughts (this can be as short as one sentence or if you're very passionate, as long as you want it to be).
  3. In-person: If you prefer pen and paper, we have an option for that as well! Just swing by Davis Library to get your printed copy of the Reading Log and fill it out as you finish reading your books. You will hold onto your log until the end of the challenge (August) and then bring in your completed log to be initialed by a Davis Library staff member.
  • Prizes: The prizes for the summer reading challenge will be awarded as follows:
    • For one book completed (read/reviewed), you will get to choose one of our small prize options. *while supplies last*
    • Participants who complete three books (read/reviewed) will then qualify for one medium prize option. *while supplies last*
    • Those who complete nine books (read/reviewed) within the three-month time period (breaks down to three books per month) will qualify to put their name into the Grand Prize drawing.
    • Note: Each participant will only qualify for each prize category one time. ALL prizes will be awarded after the end of the challenge on August 31, 2023. Prizes will need to be collected at the Davis Library circulation desk.
